Almost all of Seychelles’ waste (90%) ends up in landfills, with the total amount increasing by 3% annually. According to the Seychelles Sustainable Development Strategy (2012–2020), the 93,000 inhabitants of the western Indian Ocean archipelago produce around 48,000 tonnes of waste annually.
In an effort to make the Seychelles a cleaner place, efforts have been made to encourage residents and businesses to reduce, reuse or recycle waste.
The club accepts clothing, bedding, books, towels, kitchenware and other household items that consumers no longer use. The company’s workshop is located in Baie Lazare, in the south of Mahe, and is owned by Richard Ernestine. The workshop collects glass bottles for crushing. The crushed glass is used as aggregate in construction, such as interior finishing and leveling concrete floors. A large amount of glass is required to produce 1 ton of GRC, and due to the low production levels in island countries, it has to be mixed with other materials such as crushed rock dust or sand in large construction projects.
Used car and other vehicle tires can be sent to this company located in Le Rocher, in the Les Mamelles area of central Mahe. Recycled tires are usually cheaper than new ones. An easy way to save money!
All paper products are stored here, including cardboard and egg trays. The newspaper had to be taken to the center in Providence, a suburb of Victoria. The company is located in Providence, an industrial area on the east coast of the main island of Mahe. The company was founded in 2012 by Eandassami Rengassami and his wife. It recycles plastic bottles and aluminum cans. The company currently recycles about 3 million PET bottles per month, equivalent to 40-50 tons, and earns about $300 per ton.
The bottles are crushed and exported to China, where they are recycled into lower-quality PET bottles. These recycled bottles are often used to make other non-food products, such as detergent bottles.
The company, owned by Jothinathan Naidoo, collects and exports scrap metal. Naidoo said he has seen an increase in the amount of electronic goods such as refrigerators and stoves being thrown away, noting that batteries are extremely toxic to the environment and must be disposed of properly. Seychelles now has facilities to export batteries, which are received by Surya Enterprise. The company is located in Providence, an industrial area on the east coast of Mahe.
Computers, mobile phones, refrigerators and other gadgets have become like cars: new, better and faster models are constantly being released. The question is not only whether to update devices frequently, but more importantly, what to do if they break and become unusable. Samlo & Sons is a collection point where you can take your electronic waste for recycling. The company also collects scrap metal for export.
Here you can recycle your old printer cartridges in an environmentally friendly way. Ink Doctor is a local store where you can drop off old cartridges or buy recycled and refilled ones.
