Fake Printer Ink Seller on Shopee Gets Five-Star Reviews, Faces Lawsuit

The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living raided the warehouse of an online retailer and seized Malaysia’s largest consignment of counterfeit Epson printer ink worth about RM350,000.
On 28 August 2024, the Special Forces raided and seized over 10,000 bottles of counterfeit Epson printer ink. Upon investigation, it was found that the counterfeit ink was imported from China. The warehouse that was raided was located at Desa Sri Jenaris in Kajang, Selangor and had no signboard.
The online seller has been selling on the e-commerce platform Shopee for almost two years. The seller has a 4.9-star rating (out of 5) and offers around 30 products, including toys, furniture, fitness equipment, home appliances, printer ink, and home decor. The seller also has 3,900 followers. However, the site has received complaints from customers who claimed they received counterfeit products, damaged products, or products that were not as advertised. This prompted Epson to investigate the seller.
The original ink manufacturer said it would take legal action against these sellers and work with e-commerce platforms to remove listings selling counterfeit products or shut down entire online stores entirely.
