According to DruckerChannel, HP was forced to discontinue its budget LaserJet E-series printers due to customer issues with the HP+ service. Moreover, the HP+ service required a constant internet connection and limited the use of only genuine HP ink and toner, while third-party alternatives were prohibited. Although HP+ offered many benefits, including cloud printing and an extra year of warranty, the mandatory internet connection for budget printers irritated many consumers.
Anyway, to be clear: HP’s printer discontinuation only affects HP LaserJet printers with an “e” at the end of the model number, indicating business models are being replaced. So the HP LaserJet M110w won’t be affected, but the HP LaserJet M110we and M209dwe (two more affordable always-on printers) will no longer be manufactured or sold by HP.
Another important point is that existing HP e-Series LaserJet printer models will retain the same functionality as when they were purchased. There are currently no software updates available to unlock the full potential of the hardware, so existing customers will have to endure the e-Series and HP+ printers until they can fully replace theirs. At the very least, they will still be able to enjoy the benefits of the HP+, but after all the backlash, it would be nice if HP fully owned up to its mistakes and lifted some of the restrictions for e-Series printer users.
An HP spokesperson made the following statement (translated from German) regarding the discontinuation of these printers in an interview with DruckerChannel.
An HP spokesperson said: “Since the launch of HP+, our intelligent network printing system has been popular with customers who value its convenience, extended warranty, and broad range of solutions. We recognize that some customers in IT-managed office environments are unable to meet HP+’s cloud connectivity needs. To ensure customers have a superior printing experience in all office environments, we will no longer offer the LaserJet product line for HP+. We plan to extend proven solutions such as Print Anywhere and Smart Security to select new HP LaserJet devices. Satisfied HP+ customers will not have to make any changes.”
HP also said: “HP will be discontinuing Instant Ink toner subscriptions later this year. New customers will no longer be able to take advantage of the service. This will not impact existing Instant Ink toner subscribers, only new ones.”
The reason for discontinuing Instant Ink is unclear, as it was an optional subscription service. DruckerChannel speculates that it may have been confused with HP+, and some users even considered it a prerequisite for HP+, so HP decided to discontinue the service to make life easier for end users. At the very least, the move seems a bit redundant.
