Every building in the Halifax area (including single-family homes, multi-family residential buildings, restaurants, commercial properties, and institutions) is required to separate trash, recyclables, organic waste (green bins), paper, and cardboard for collection as specified in Bylaw S-600 [PDF]. There is no limit to the number of recycling bags.
All corrugated cardboard must be flat lined. (Including electrical boxes and pizza boxes). Separate from paper and container recycling.
Curbside Collection: Flatten cardboard boxes. Tie into bales approximately 2′ x 3′ x 8′ and place next to other recycling bags and paper recycling bags.
For apartments and condos: Flatten cardboard boxes. Place boxes in a cardboard box or container in a construction waste area.

The Municipal Curbside Waste Collection is a bagged waste collection program. Recyclable materials must be placed in tied blue waste bags before being placed at the curb.

For health and safety reasons, roadside recycling carts are not accepted. The cart must tip automatically or semi-automatically.
Every building in the Halifax area must have trash bins, recycling bins, organic waste bins (green bins), paper and cardboard boxes. Residents are required to separate their own waste and dispose of it in the appropriate bins.
Prohibit the disposal of recyclable and compostable materials in landfills. Halifax-area apartment buildings must provide tenants with commercial containers for sorting organic waste, blue bag recyclables, waste paper, corrugated cardboard, and trash. Containers and/or designated collection areas must be properly labeled to indicate the type of material.
If your building does not offer recycling or composting services, you can call 311 to report it. Each person is responsible for separating their own trash and following their building’s recycling and composting programs. Provincial and municipal laws require that these materials be properly classified.

Shipping costs are $45 per tonne ($4.50 per 100 kg). Shipping is free for parcels under 50 kg. Public collection boxes for paper and blue bags are available during business hours.
